Title: | J-W2 colors and their utility on finding spectral binaries |
Topic: | Data Tips and Techniques |
Abstract: | Spectral binaries are unresolved binary systems whose blended-light spectra shows peculiarities from both objects. When a T dwarf is the hidden secondary, its signature methane absorption is the giveaway sign that the peculiar spectrum corresponds to a binary. While M and L dwarfs are bright in the JHK bands, T dwarfs are particularly bright in W2, therefore colors involving both sets of filters could serve as a discriminant to find spectral binary candidates from photometry alone. We present analysis of J-W2 and K-W2 colors and explore whether they may be a viable method of identifying spectral binaries.
