Title:WISE as the cornerstone for all-sky photometric redshift samples
Topic:Synergy with other surveys
Abstract:Until the advent of WISE, extragalactic science over the full 4pi sky was limited by the lack of three-dimensional information at sufficient depths and angular scales. We have resolved this situation by joining WISE with other major photometric all-sky samples – 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS – and constructing unique multi-wavelength datasets, and subsequently deriving photometric redshifts for the galaxies included therein. The first result of these efforts – the 2MASS Photometric Redshift catalog (2MPZ) – contains 1 million galaxies at K<13.9 with precise photo-z's of delta_z~0.013 at a median z~0.1. It is publicly available and currently used by several groups, including us, for various all-sky probes of the local universe. In the next step of our program we went beyond 2MASS, taking advantage of much larger depths offered by WISE and SuperCOSMOS. Here we present the resulting catalog, which includes 20 million galaxies reaching up to z~0.45 over 75% of the sky, with photo-z accuracy of delta_z~0.03. By giving access to much larger volumes and angular scales than available so far in 3D, these novel datasets are ideal for numerous all-sky cosmological applications, such as testing the degree of isotropy and homogeneity of the low-redshift Universe, probing cosmological models through various signals measured in tomographic cross-correlations with the CMB (Sachs-Wolfe, Sunyaev-Zeldovich, lensing), as well as in concert with other state-of-the art datasets at all possible wavelengths.
