Title:Brown Dwarfs in the WISE Era
Topic:Discoveries
Abstract:One of the primary science goals of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) was the discovery of nearby, cool (Teff < 500 K) brown dwarfs. By nearly any measure, WISE succeeded in doing so in spades. In this talk, I will review the motivation for studying cool brown dwarfs, why WISE has been so adept at finding these brown dwarfs, and some of the more exciting discoveries made in the five years since WISE was launched including the discovery of a new spectral class (Y) and the third and fourth closet systems to the Sun. Looking forward, I will also briefly discuss how NEOWISE-R will continue to advance our understanding of the low-mass members of the solar neighborhood.
