Title:Surveying the Extended Solar Neighborhood with Pan-STARRS and WISE
Topic:Synergy with other surveys
Abstract:The combination of the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) survey with WISE provides a
unique wide-field (30,000 sq. degs) multi-epoch, multi-wavelength
dataset spanning optical to mid-infrared wavelengths. We have used
this merged dataset to find and characterize brown dwarfs within ~100
pc, in particular benefiting from the high-quality proper motions
generated by PS1. The depth and quality of PS1+WISE have enabled us
to construct large samples of L and hotter T dwarfs, complementary to
the coolest objects that have been the focus of WISE-only searches,
and thereby yielding a rich, well-defined census for studying brown
dwarf evolution with age. Similarly, the sensitivity of PS1+WISE
allows us to discover of extremely rare objects, including the
youngest substellar objects in the solar neighborhood, down to the
planetary-mass regime.
