Title:The NEOWISE-Reactivation Proper Motion Survey - Methods and Initial Results
Topic:Discoveries
Abstract:Recent discoveries using multi-epoch WISE mid-infrared data have demonstrated that some of our closest substellar neighbors are lurking unseed because of their low temperatures and large proper motions. WISE was reactivated in December of 2013 to search for potentially hazardous near-Earth objects (NEOWISE-R). The single frames from the NEOWISE-R dataset have additional value beyond the boundaries of our Solar System because they extend the time baseline between WISE epochs by a factor of 8-14 times compared to previous WISE proper motion surveys. Such an increase allows for a significant improvement in the accuracy of proper motion measurements and the identification of sources with proper motions that were too small to be discerned in the previous WISE proper motion surveys. We have initiated a project to use the NEOWISE-R data to identify missing members of the Solar neighborhood via their large proper motions. We summarize our search method for identifying high proper motion objects in the NEOWISE-R dataset, and show some initial results of the NEOWISE-R proper motion survey.
