Title:Cosmicflows with WISE
Topic:Discoveries
Abstract:Cosmicflows-2 provides distances for over 8000 galaxies giving the most extensive all-sky sample of peculiar velocities available. A detailed description of local structure is developed from a Wiener Filter reconstruction of velocities and densities. We are embedded in a basin of attraction identified by a pattern of local peculiar velocities. Our basin of attraction which includes the mass of 100 quadrillion suns and extends across 160 Mpc is given the name Laniakea Supercluster.

The characteristic limit of the current distance compilation of 100 Mpc is not yet sufficient to encompass a "fair sample" of the universe with global motions at rest with respect to the microwave background. The goal of Cosmicflows-3 will be to extend a factor 2 further in distance, including an order of magnitude more volume. The galaxy photometry necessary for the measurement of distances is derived from WISE images.
